WETLAND STORIES

 Postcards to the Future:
Engaging Youth in Wetland Conservation

During the Wetland Stories exhibition in 2023, the Postcards to the Future workshops and the in-exhibition activity table became a vibrant hub of creativity and engagement. Over 200 children and youth, ranging in age from 5 to 18, eagerly participated, crafting their visions of a sustainable future. The workshops provided a unique platform for young minds to express their hopes and dreams through art, fostering a profound connection to the themes of wetland stewardship and conservation. The bustling activity table within the exhibition was a testament to the program's succes, with participants enthusiastically creating postcards that reflected their imagnative ideas an learned knowledge. These postcards became part of an ongoing community art display within the exhibition.

Year 9 and 11, classes from the Bushranger and Duke of Edinburgh programs visited the exhibition, broadening the exhibition's local impact. Further enriching their experiences, workshops held at the school after their visits.. These workshops not only reinforced classroom learning but also immersed students in storytelling and thought-provoking discussions that brought the importance of wetland conservation to life. The integration of these education programs within the exhibition highlighted the immense value of interactive and participatory learning experiences, leaving a lastin impression on the young attendees and their understanding of our natural world.

The postcards, addressed to the Mayor of Mandurah in 2050, formed a time capsule that was given to the City for safekeeping. To be opened in 2050, the capsule contains hopes of today's youth for the future of the Peel-Yalgorup wetlands. This gesture serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring commitment required to preserve these precious ecosystems for future generations.
